This book proposes an unprecedentedly refi ned chronology for the Mycenaean palaces of the Greek mainland and discusses its meaning for our understanding of the socio-political organization of the Aegean, ca. 1375-1175
B.C.E. The results of this research suggest that the Mycenaean palaces were interconnected but independent polities. Their “international” role as the most powerful states in the Aegean began after the major destruction that struck Knossos at an advanced stage of the 14th century B.C.E. The collapse of the Mycenaean palaces was a gradual process, which took place ca. 1230-1175 B.C.E. The acme of the Mycenaean palaces thus occurred later than traditionally assumed and was both short-lived and unstable.

Salvatore Vitale is Associate Professor in Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Pisa. He has co-directed archaeological projects on Kos and has been the principal pottery investigator at Mitrou and Pylos. His published work concerns Aegean chronologies, cultural formation processes, archaeological theory, and landscape analysis.
